Wild Things enter Comic Con!

On Friday, July 24th between 10:15 AM and 12:30 PM, Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are will a presentation at this year's San Diego Comic Con!

Yet no words about who from the "Where the Wild Things Are" cast or crew will attend the presentation, it's also unknown if new footage from the movie will be showed.

However, if you're attending, you have go get in early.

Spike to star in british sitcom!

Apparantly this is old news, but I just found out, from Broadcast Now:

Details have emerged of the cast list for Channel 4’s up-coming comedy pilot The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, which includes cult film director Spike Jonze.

The pilot, which is being produced by RDF Television, will air as part of C4’s second comedy showcase season and is being written by Arrested Development star David Cross and Shaun Pye.

The story centres on a US executive who finds himself out of his depth when he is mistakenly sent to run his company’s UK arm.

Jonze is best known for directing the 1999 film Being John Malkovich, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He also directed the music video to Fat Boy Slim’s Praise You and is currently the creative director of online TV network VBS.tv.

Other cast members set to appear alongside Jonze include Russell Tovey, who plays the werewolf in Touchpaper Television’s BBC3 comedy Being Human, and David Cross’ Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett.

While promoting his new movie "Away We Go", the writer of "Where the Wild Things Are" Dave Eggers were talking about Spike Jonze and the upcoming movie (Sorry for the delay):

The A.V. Club: Which came first, working on Away We Go, Where The Wild Things Are, or the adaptations you’re doing of your books? How did you get started with Hollywood?

Dave Eggers: I’m not making any adaptations of my books, thank God. I mean, I’m not writing them. People option things, whatever. Where The Wild Things Are started back in 2003. I had never written a screenplay or started a screenplay or read a screenplay, and I didn’t know anything. That just started with a phone call from Spike. I had no idea what I was doing.

Vendela Vida: You didn’t know him that well either, right?

DE: No, we knew each other at that point, but we hadn’t worked on anything together. It just seemed like… It’s hard to say now, because I love Spike’s movies and I love the book, and I didn’t think it would be a six-year process. I thought it would be a few months, maybe. But that was still going on when Vendela and I started doing the earliest notes for this movie. We didn’t set out to write a screenplay. We were in the middle of writing other books, and we were just sort of taking notes about pregnancy…

Warner Bros still fears "Wild Things" release

Just as you thought everything was going fine with "Where the Wild Things Are", as buzz was building, while Spike was finishing his masterpiece, with a trailer giving doubters hope about a amazing movie based on the classic. But Warner Bros. is still worried about. Because they want money. And apparently not quality. Advertising Age breaks it down:

LOS ANGELES (AdAge.com) -- At Warner Bros. Pictures' marketing suites, a wild rumpus is about to start.

A year late and millions of dollars over budget, Spike Jonze will deliver his big-screen adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are" to studio executives later this month. But the marketing department is flummoxed: While the film's new trailer is drawing plaudits from many online fans, the movie's darker-than-expected, adult tone (and bloated budget) has many at Warner Bros. privately worried about its appeal to children and parents.

"It doesn't look like a family movie," said the head of creative advertising at a rival studio familiar with Warner's angst. "Are they going for the cineastes or are they going to convince kids to go? It's the most interesting marketing problem in town right now."

In an interview with Advertising Age, "Wild Things" producer Gary Goetzman said, "Spike has made a film that crosses all demographics." But that might just be the problem.

In Mr. Jonze's "Wild Things," 9-year-old Max accidentally witnesses his single mom canoodling with her new boyfriend on the living-room sofa. It's a poignant scene, but also the sort of stark departure from the source material that might make some parents reluctant to bring to theaters the 4- to 8-year-olds Maurice Sendak's book has been entertaining since 1964.

'It respects the original'
Andrew Percival, senior VP at Mojo, one of the Los Angeles trailer houses that helped cut the "Wild Things" trailer and design its posters, said, "The film has taken these themes in the book to a very real place. For that, I do applaud it. There is an originality to this film -- it doesn't speak down to kids; it speaks with them."

"Wild Things" animation supervisor Daniel Jeannette also dismissed the idea that the film is too dark or mature for kid audiences.

"The book, too, was received as too dark for children at the time [it was published]," Mr. Jeannette said. "So in a sense, the film might not follow the track of the four-quadrant children's film. But it doesn't exclude anyone; it appeals to children of all ages, including adults. It respects the original material." The book has sold more than 10 million copies.

How does a costly motion picture intended to be a broadly accessible, kid-friendly family film turn out not to be so? And how does a studio market such a surprise?

Marketing executives at Warner Bros. wrestling with that issue declined to be interviewed by Advertising Age. Nevertheless, the studio appears to be facing at least one of two equally scary realities.

The first is that it may simply have lost control of the creators. Mr. Jonze, the director of quirky, sophisticated adult films such as "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation," was hardly a "safe" choice for a kids' movie. The "Wild Things" script comes from the Gen X literary icon Dave Eggers, author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." Neither man screams "Bambi."

About all the studio and the filmmakers agree on is that their discussions about the tone of the film, which has been shooting since April 2006, have been contentious. Mr. Jonze, in a recent interview with fan site Ain't It Cool News, said he had "freaked the studio out" because his movie "wasn't a studio film for kids, or it wasn't a traditional film about kids."

It's unclear if that was possible because Mr. Jonze wangled what's known in Hollywood parlance as "final cut," a contractual concession that gives the director final approval of what goes into a film. Whoever wins final cut effectively determines what sort of film will be made and to whom it can be marketed. Production insiders said Mr. Jonze has final cut on the picture; studio insiders said he does not.

Not Warner's kind of movie
The second, unavoidable reality is that regardless of who had creative control, Warner Bros. no longer has the dedicated infrastructure or expertise to market sophisticated, adult movies.

It shut down both its Warner Independent Pictures and Picturehouse labels in May 2008 but greenlighted "Wild Things" back in 2006. In other words, while Warner Bros. suits may never have expected to get a traditional kid-friendly picture along the lines of a "Harry Potter" when they hired Mr. Jonze, they also had no idea the marketing division best-suited to sell "Wild Things" would be extinct two years later.

Indeed, with its realistic view of childhood fears and confusions, "Where the Wild Things Are" appears to be precisely the kind of tricky-to-market, sophisticated movie Warner Bros. has decided it is not interested in releasing: Last year, for example, the studio dropped Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" just as it was coming to market. Fox Searchlight scooped it up, taking home both the best-picture Oscar and $141 million in domestic grosses.

Meanwhile, despite Mr. Goetzman's insistence that "everyone is going to go see this picture," it doesn't appear the studio thinks many kids will be coming: "Wild Things" will make its debut on Oct. 16, and, according to the head of marketing and distribution at a rival studio, "when you don't have a single kids' holiday nearby, that's not fertile ground for family pictures."

Indeed, only three films released in October have ever opened at more than $40 million: "Scary Movie 3," in 2003; "Shark's Tale," in 2004; and "High School Musical 3," in 2008. "Wild Things" will need to open well above those lofty October numbers to justify its $100 million-plus production and marketing budget. If it doesn't, the question will go from whether "Wild Things" can be profitable to how wildly unprofitable it will be.

Have any movie going through re-shoots ever succeeded? EDIT: I mean MASSIVE re-shoots, where the director weren't allowed to get a say in it, like The Invasion or Babylon A.D.

His Jackass-mate teams up with his Ex-Wife

You already know the story about Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze. (They were married). Actually I haven't seen all of Sofia Coppola's films, but Lost in Translation sure is a great movie. And then it's a relief to hear that she's making a new movie, after taking a break to spend time with her daughter. Her new movie is entitled "Somewhere" which plot centers about a decadent, bad-boy actor living at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood who begins to re-examine his life after a surprise visit from his 11-year-old daughter.

You already know about Jackass. That MTV show, which Spike Jonze worked on, which have nothing to do with Sofia Coppola. It's kind of like the opposite. One of Jackass' "stars" were Chris Pontius, now a friend of Spike. And Chris is apparently starting a "serious acting" career.

So now Sofia, Spike's former wife, and Chris Pontius, one of Spike's friends teams up for Sofia's new movie. That's funny....

On another note, every people on the web seems to this weird.

It was the mid ‘90’s, and I was renting a room in Chris Moeller’s condo in Huntington Beach. We headed over to McGoo’s house for a party. There were a few riders from the U.K. staying at our place. The U.K. guys were stoked because Andy Jenkins, Lew, and Spike Jonze were supposed to show up at the party, the guys from the legendary FREESTYLIN’ magazine, and the blokes had never met Spike. Spike had become super famous over the previous couple years by directing several music videos, notably the Beastie Boy’s “Sabotage” video and Weezer’s “Buddy Holly.” So we wandered into the party, and found Andy and Lew. Since I had worked with them years before, I think I introduced them to the U.K. guys. Immediately, someone asked if Spike was coming to the party. Andy got a weird look on his face and replied, “ Uh… Spike’s camping in Africa with Francis Ford Coppola.” We all laughed at his joke, and I asked “no, seriously, where is he? These guys want to meet him.” Andy replied, “Seriously… he’s camping in Africa with Francis Ford Coppola.” Jaws dropped, and Andy and Lew just kind of shook their heads.

Nearly ten years earlier, during my short stint at FREESTYLIN’ magazine in late 1986, I was standing outside the warehouse on a break, chatting with Andy and Lew. We heard a noise, and a motorcycle turned into the parking lot and pulled up to us, piloted by Ron Wilkerson. At the time, Ron was one of Haro’s main pros, and toured extensively with Brian Blyther and Dave Nourie. The motorcycle was an old cruising bike, like a Kawasaki 650 or something. There was no faring or tail boxes like a Goldwing, it was a cruising around town street bike. On the back of the bike was a smiling, blond-haired kid who looked to be about thirteen. Ron took off his helmet and said “Hey guys, this is Spike, he was on tour with us.” And with those words, The Master Cluster began to form. The three of us looked at this kid crazy enough to get on the back of Ron Wilkerson’s motorcycle for a two hour ride in SoCal traffic. We started talking to Ron and Spike about the Haro tour they’d just returned from. Suddenly Lew made a funny face, it was an “aha” moment. He said, “Spike… are you Spike Jonze?” Spike said that he was. Lew said, "Did you send in a photo for that photo contest we had?” Spike said he had. Lew said, "You won a prize."

With that, we all headed inside. As fate would have it, we had just decided the winners, but they hadn’t been notified yet. Spike had sent in an 8 x 10 black and white print of himself doing a four foot air on a halfpipe. He had taken magic markers and colored in the photo in places. It was definitely the most original photo we had come in, but I voted against it because others had bigger airs and better riding. But Andy and Lew loved it, and we wound up giving Spike Jonze his prize that day, I think.

A few months later, I got laid off, and a couple months after that, Andy and Lew hired Spike at FREESTYLIN’. He was 17 or 18 then, but looked much younger. He melded into the scene, both as a rider and a photographer. He was a damn good rider AND skater, and could have been a decent pro in both, I think. But he was mostly a photographer, just one of the guys at the contests, shooting for FREESTYLIN’. Then in the early 90’s, we’d start hearing stories about him. Spike’s heir to the Spiegel catalog fortune, and his real name’s Adam something. Andy, Lew, and Spike are starting a magazine called Dirt. Spike started a skateboard company called Girl. Spike’s directing a music video. The Beastie Boys just mentioned Spike on the MTV Music Awards. It just kept going.

So when Andy Jenkins said that Spike was camping in Africa with Francis Ford Coppola, it really wasn’t that surprising to me. As most of you know, Spike went on to direct “Being John Malkovich” and “Adaptation,” and then produce the “Jackass” TV show and movies, with former FREESTYLIN’ art director (and fourth member of The Muster Cluster) Jeff Tremaine directing.

Yes kids, Spike Jonze WAS a BMXer. He’s also a nice guy. He’s one of the few in the bike world who has never made fun of me, which is kind of amazing since the other Wizard Publications employees, Andy, Lew, and Chris Moeller made fun of me pretty much non-stop. I last saw Spike at a ramp contest in Moreno Valley in about ‘95, and Spike actually came up and said “hi” to me. He’s a charmed one, that Spike. More power to him. - White Bear

Fine UK start for "Synecdoche" at the BO

With a release in only 30 theathers "Synecdoche, New York" was able to catch up $186,850 in the first weekend of it's release in the United Kingdom. With a average of $6,228 per theater, it scored a number #11 spot on the chart.

As for now, there's only two other countries which still have "Synecdoche, New York" on the slate of upcoming releases - Denmark and Czech Republic.

Missed Spacevoyages for Spike

With the new "Star Trek" movie ruling the domestic box office, and science fiction being all hot again these days, makes this the best time to talk about how Spike missed all his trips to the outer space.

First of all, there's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a chance he turned down for unknown reasons, but I guess it's the same reason he turned down "Memoirs of a Geisha" - because he was too busy working on "Where the Wild Things Are". This weird science fiction comedy, failed to meet the film's expectations, as it was based on a classic book, but received rather bland reviews by the critics, and underperformed at the boxoffice. Spike were given the script by director Jay Roach, but he suggested Nick Goldsmith and Garth Jennings (thanks imdb) instead.

When Spike still were a new young hot boy in 1999, with "Being John Malkovich" being a success, and his whole career being on a fast track, he was set to work a on a series called "Metropolis" for the sci-fi channel. However, Spike choose to leave the project, when MTV have his "Jackass" the green light. "Metropolis" were described as a "paranormal cop" series. But I don't know what happened to it, after Spike left.

There's a rumor surfacing the Internet about how Spike nearly got the directing gig of "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones". It should all have started, as he once met George Lucas, while he was visiting his then-girlfriend Sofia Coppola, on the set of "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" in which Sofia portrayed the character Saché. In recent interview Spike have said he was a fan of Star Wars, when he was a kid, so you might assume it would be a childhood’s dream coming true for him - or we could assume. But how awesome would that have been? But mr. Lucas wanted to direct the film himself. Spike would have been the third director - besides George Lucas - to helm a live action "Star Wars" feature.

"Synecdoche, New York": The 5 Star Review

As earlier posted, Empire Magazine - the world's biggest movie magazine - have given "Synecdoche, New York" a 5/5 star review.

Review
Scriptwriters have their obsessions. For Billy Wilder it was the mercenary heart of the American Dream; with John Milius it was something as naggingly perfect as John Ford’s Western, The Searchers. For Charlie Kaufman, it’s always been the knotty perplexity of the human brain. Yet while we’ve travelled from such magical places as the inside of John Malkovich’s head in his 1999 screenwriting debut, Being John Malkovich, to the crumbling beach house at the heart of Jim Carrey’s romantic memories in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Kaufman’s scripts have always begun in frosty grey worlds inhabited by frizz-haired outcasts.

In the past, Kaufman’s director/collaborators Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry have tempered this gloom with larger-than-life performances (Malkovich, Adaptation), or a comic-book zaniness (Human Nature, Eternal Sunshine). With Kaufman at the controls, reality is grittier than ever: Caden (Philip Seymour Hoffman) lives in a cramped apartment with an unhappy artist wife Adele (Catherine Keener) and their four year-old daughter, Olive (Sadie Goldstein). Even the film stock looks grainy and deep-pored. The dream-logic of previous scripts is also more overt. Events are filtered through Caden’s rheumy worldview, where cartoons of himself feature in pharmaceutical ads on TV, and, poisoned by Adele’s artistic ambitions, both he and Olive appear to be excreting paint, their bodies decaying from the start. It’s here that you can see SNY’s roots as a horror movie project, focusing on fears of illness and death. What saves these scenes from excessive gloom is Kaufman’s desire to locate his characters in the real, rather than the comic.

When Adele leaves Caden and takes their daughter to start a new life in Berlin, Caden hooks up with the cat-like Hazel (Samantha Morton), who works in his theatre’s box office. Their relationship is flawed and frustrating, but the chemistry between the two actors is a fizzing delight which the film revels in.

This idea that we’re seeing the beauty of life that Caden is missing is brought home when he’s awarded his Genius Grant and is shown his gargantuan Manhattan work space. His only idea is an epic play about his own life — something “big, true and tough. You know, finally put my real self into something”, with actors playing his daughter, ex-wife, Hazel and himself. A grandiose attempt to make his wife notice him, Caden’s play may also signify our own desire to order the chaos of the everyday, or simply Kaufman’s inability to finish his script. But as it grows — with Caden enlisting thousands of actors and building life-size New York sets — so does the film’s richness, spinning off into a looking-glass world of magical revelations and surreal dead ends, where characters buy burning houses, become doppelgängers of each other and start dating the fake versions of themselves. By the end, it’s hard to tell whether we’re in the maze of Caden’s mind or observing real life, but what cuts through is the humanity on show. Caden’s moment of enlightenment may come too late but, for us, the experience is close to overpowering.

Verdict
Astonishing. Kaufman has surpassed himself with a film that will delight and confound. You will want to see it again. And again.

Guess what? Spike opens a blog!

First of all, I'll have to apologize for the lack of recent updates on this blog. Even though there have a few things to blog about, I overlooked the opportunities and continued this page's rest. But now (!!) there's big news! Spike Jonze himself have opened a blog, entitled "We Love You So";

In October 2009 Spike Jonze’s feature film rendition of Maurice Sendak’s classic story Where The Wild Things Are will hit movie theaters worldwide. The film represents years of work from hundreds of different artists, writers, photographers, musicians, actors, and creators of all degrees. This place has been established to help shed some light on many of the small influences that have converged to make this massive project a reality.

Simply put, this a place to learn about things we think are great and to share with you the things those things helped make. Wild Things indeed… And also probably a lot of other randoms things that catch our eye along the way.

We hope you like it.

Empire features a lot of Spike stuff

The all-new, 20th Years Anniversary issue of the world's biggest moviemagazine Empire, featured exclusive new looks and articles about James Cameron's Avatar, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Spielberg's TinTin, news about The Hobbit, Harry Potter 6+7+8 and notes by Spielberg all around the magazine. However, what caught my attention were a talk with producer Vincent Landay about "Where the Wild Things Are", a small Spike Jonze + Kanye West note, and a gloaming positive review of "Synecdoche, New York". Yep, this Empire were filled with Spike stuff.

There ain't really any news in this article - sadly. Neither any new pictures. But the released pictures looks SO good on paper, and not only on a computer screen.

We already knew this, but it's still worth a mention.

This review will be online in a few days, when "Synecdoche, New York" goes into a nationwide release in England. And this review is really, really, really, REALLY positive. Really. It receives the top score 5 stars (!), on par with their review of "Being John Malkovich", and one more than "Adaptation." and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Way to go!

Just to go OT; You have got to buy this months Empire Magazine. It's filled a lot of cool, great stuff about upcoming movies. And the edit by Steven Spielberg, all magazine through, is certainly worth a read. A nice take on different director's thought, and Steve's own vision. Could you imagine "Being Steven Spielberg"? Going into his head would probably be pretty AWESOME!

"Wild Things" hits "The Road" next October

Another movie have entered the month of October, and it's studio have set it's release up against the rumpus from the wild things. And I'm talking about the looong delayed "The Road", with Viggo Mortensen, Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron. However, this ain't a movie for the family, and will certainly not be stealing "Where the Wild Things Are"'s audience, since it appeals to different crowds. Instead we can worry about the release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 - released two weeks before, and Astro Boy - the week after.

A remake of a wildly unknown horror movie, entitled "The Stepfather" is the third movie to be released on October 16. This movie's boxoffice might be hurt by "The Road". The horror movie is rated PG-13, while "The Road" is set with a R-Rating. However, "Where the Wild Things Are" haven't yet received a rating from the MPAA, and it makes me wonder, what it will receive. It won't be a G rating, doubtfully a PG-13, but maybe a PG rating for "fantasy violence" like Narnia: Prince Caspian. In that movie, a persons head was cut off (at least that what I've heard), while in "Where the Wild Things Are" *SPOILERS* someone's arm will be ripped off.

These days, Spike is getting paid for making a Softbank commercial, filming with Brad Pitt, in Midtown Manhattan on April 29, 2009 in New York City. Life is just great. I don't know who's most lucky, Brad Pitt for working with Spike Jonze, or Spike Jonze for working with Brad Pitt. Seriously, this dude's career have been a blast the last couple of years. But hey - it's Spike, so Brad's the lucky guy!

Karen O has spoken to us about the soundtrack to hotly anticipated movie Where The Wild Things Are.

It was recently announced that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman has produced the music for the Spike Jonze adaptation.

She revealed: "I got involved because of Spike- I guess there is a child like innocence about my music or my persona that he always just kind of dialled into.

"So I guess he thought I should make music for Where the Wild Things Are and I assembled a group of mostly rock musicians to make the music including Nick and Brian (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs)”

A trailer was released for Where The Wild Things Are last week which featured a new acoustic version of Arcade Fire’s Wake Up and it was revealed that Karen and composer Carter Burwell have made the soundtrack.

The movie is written by Jonze and author Dave Eggers and is set for release this Autumn after several delays.

Karen O continued: "To play on it and it was a really amazing experience and I think what he has accomplished with the film is basically the impossible"

Karen was previously romantically linked to Jonze- who directed various classic music videos and Being John Malkovich. Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album is out this week.

It's kind of amazing how I can continue to be more and more excited for this! At the moment, I'm constantly listning to Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Zero", which really have an awesome tune, check it out here. Speaking of Carter Burwell, he is also one interesting composer. Mr. Burwell also scored Spike's Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. He's also the composer, which the Coens brothers always use. Check out his latest score from Twilight below, which was the best thing about that movie. Hopefully that won't be the case for "Where the Wild Things Are":

Paul Dano is still "Wild"?

Paul Dano have been on the cast list for "Where the Wild Things Are" for quite a while, but there's also been rumors about him being replaced by Chris Cooper. In the trailer Chris Cooper is credited, but Paul Dano isn't. So you would assume that Mr. Dano isn't involved in this movie anymore. But apparently he is, or what?

According to The Playlist Paul is still voicing Alexander the Goat. And Paul have some positive things to say about the movie and Spike Jonze. Following text is taken directly from the source:

Dano, who plays a frolicking Wild Thing goat named Alexander, talked a little bit about the movie saying that "Spike Jonze is the perfect guy for this movie. He's got a childlike imagination." On the rehearsal process he said the group spent some time working on a soundstage because "that's what acting is and if you just go into a recording studio it's all putting out and there's nothing to take in." Lastly, Dano says that he "feels quite good about how [the film] represents the book. It's a children's film about childhood that's not just for one audience."

This is confusing. Chris Cooper is credited in the trailer, but Dano isn't. Maybe Dano was replaced, which he maybe doesn't mind, while he promotes the movie, without actually being in it.

I've got to admit, I didn't recognize him at first. But only from certain angels, you will be able to see the great nose. I was actually going to post a new thread, about how they missed this one in the trailer, but they certainly didn't. Yes the trailer was full of delicious surprises. Actually this wild thing looks a lot like the one from the book.

The Wild Thing is in the script called Ira, and will in the movie be voiced by Academy Award Winning actor Forest Whitaker. Where the Wild Things Are opens on October 16, and is now easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

I love reading a interview with Spike Jonze, but this recent interview he did with Vulture, is kind of a tearjerker. Read it below.

Spike Jonze has nearly completed Where the Wild Things Are, the epic children's-book adaptation he directed from a script co-written with Dave Eggers, but after coping with studio clashes, reshoots and rewrites, and special effects "unlike anything I've dealt with before," he's feeling bummed about one thing in particular: "I've been working on the same movie for four years and basically haven't been paid anyway," he said at MoMA last night, following the premiere of Patrick Daughters and Marcel Dzama's new music video for Department of Eagles. "When you break down how much you're making [over that time] ... Yeah, it's kind of crazy."

But Jonze is relieved to be putting the finishing touches on the film, which is due in October. And he's excited about another labor of love: a documentary about Wild Things creator Maurice Sendak, which he hopes to finish in time for the release of the main event. "He's awesome and amazing," said Jonze of the 80-year-old writer, who wrote the book when he was living in a basement apartment on West 9th Street, and who now lives in Connecticut. "But yeah, this year I should probably get back to work on other stuff, and start making money again," the filmmaker said with a shrug. "I haven't made money in a long time."

Maybe more music videos — like the "short film" he just made with Kanye — would be in order? "No way, I don't think so. There are no budgets at all. We support ourselves with commercials. That's how I make money." Our all-time favorite was that Gap ad in which customers rip a store to shreds. Well, "It's a good thing to get paid to destroy a Gap."

Well, he did destroy that GAP well. And I'm really looking forward to that Maurice Sendak documentary. If Spike finds him interesting, then I guess I would too.

Recovering second week for "Synecdoche, New York"

After the DVD version of "Synecdoche, New York" disappointed last week, by only earning $13.32 millions in first week of DVD release. But it hold up pretty well this week, and only dropped around -13% from last week, and scored $11.91 millions.

The movie yet haven't reached home it's budget, but if it holds as well this week, it will have reached the $30 million budget in a few days.

Kanye West and Jonze re-teams for new music video

According to USA Today, director Spike Jonze and Kanye West are set to work with each other once again. This time, it will also be for a music video, for Kanye West's single See You In My Nightmare (808's & Heartbreak) from Kanye's newest album, Heartbreak.

Apparently the anticipated trailer for "Where the Wild Things Are" debuted on this daily version of The Ellen Show, but if you - like me - sadly missed it, you will be glad to hear, that the trailer will be on the Internet later today!

The words about the trailer was REALLY positive, and called it more than amazing. I hope I won't get disappointed!

However the show first airs at the west coast around 3pm out there, 6pm EST, so you might still be able to catch it.

Spike Jonze thinks the Wild Things are both cuddly and dangerous.

Since Spike Jonze was a child, he wanted to ride a Wild Thing.

Max Records enjoyed to scream at his on-screen mother, Catherine Keener. Aldo he's not used to scream at people like that.

The movies' lead actor Max Records, was 9 years old while filming, but is now 11.

Catherine Keener have read the book to her son, Clyde, who is just as old, as her on-screen son.

James Gandolfini is the only person, to deliver a voice in the movies first trailer.

Local actors/actress was hired to wear the Wild Things costumes.

Spike Jonze turned down the chance to make the movie fully animated, because he wanted people to feel the Wild Things, and thought it would be more exciting and dangerous if a real kid, were running around with the wild things.

The Bull will be voiced by Michael Berry Jr., but won't have any lines.

Lead actor Max Records had never travelled internationally before filming this in Australia.

According to USA Today, Spike and Max (Records) hang out on the set. I can't imagine anyone else playing Max, the filmmaker says of his novice actor who appeared in music video for Death Cab for Cutie and Cake. He is a very special sort of kid. Deep and thoughtful. Sweet and sincere. Wild, imaginative and caring. He brought all that to the film.

Max Records have both received really positive raves, and hateful comments on how bad his acting was. So it's good to see Spike is backing him up.

"Monsters vs. Aliens" should do well at the boxoffice

Studio Briefing are sure that DreamWorks new animated movie "Monsters vs. Aliens", should do really well at the box-office. Which makes it the perfect place for a "Where the Wild Things Are" trailer to debut.

Presumably making his judgment sight unseen, Rich Greenfield of Pali Capital Research has estimated that DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens will earn a "conservative" $483 million worldwide. (He forecasts $186 million domestically and $297 million overseas.) Greenfield, who also raised his estimates for DreamWorks Animation as a whole, said that he had based his projections on the recent strength shown in movie attendance as well as the benefits of premium 3D ticket pricing. Greenfield also predicts that Monsters will become an addition to its "growing stable of franchises that it is exploiting."

"Wild" trailers in 3500 theaters!

On Friday March 27th, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures released "Monsters vs. Aliens", and while a lot of people are looking forward to that, there's also a group who are excited to see the first trailer for Where the Wild Things Are - like me!

The animated monstermovie will, according to Box Office Mojo, be shown at around 3500 theaters, and remember the numbers of screens is higher! When the monsters and the aliens are released, a small doze of the Wild Things will be too. With the release in 3500 theaters, it's the second biggest debut of 2009, only beated by Watchmen who were shown in 3,611 theaters, the weekend it opened.

However it's unsure if the trailer will play in every theater, but hopefully it will.

"Synecdoche, New York" have decent DVD debut

On March 10, the DVD release of "Synecdoche, New York" was ready in stores. And according to Box Office Mojo the DVD release scored a rental index of $11.32 millions by 6 days in release.

Those numbers aren't exactly amazing, but much better than the domestic boxoffice for the movie (also the international debut wasn't so good either). But the DVD numbers sure will make the movie reach it's $20 million budget.

Not a teaser, full 3-min trailer, scored to 'Wake Up' by Arcade Fire (it fits beautifully, and is either the 3rd or 4th time the band has agreed to license their music, won't be in the actual film obviously)

Try as I might, I can't verbalize how I felt about the trailer beyond the most grandiose superlatives: 'beautiful' and 'gorgeous' and 'breathtaking', making me sound like Pete Hammond. The environments in particular (there's a sequence of cutting between 4 shots of Max running through different environments that is absolutely magical) are a work of incredible vision, especially in light of the production methods Spike opted for. It does feel like a 'kids movie' (not pejorative): the trailer repeatedly made me about eight years old, over and over again. Unless I'm an idiot, and you'll see yourself in a week or two, the finalized monsters are some kind of incredible technical achievement.

Much of the VFX work went to detailed facial animations on the monster's eyes and faces to give them a functional expressive palette. That remains the only post work left before release. They look nothing short of real and feel very alive and very, very huggable

It really sounds like something Spike would have put together!

Spike and "Synecdoche" won Independent Spirit Awards!

Yes! It won! Congratulations to Spike Jonze, Anthony Bregman, Charlie Kaufman & Sidney Kimmel for winning "Best First Feature" for Synecdoche, New York! It finally received some honor. The movie was up against "After School", "Medicine for Melancholy", "Padre Nuesto" and "Sleep Dealer", but swept the floor, and took the prize home. It's the second time Spike Jonze was nominated for "Best First Feature" and it the second time he wins the prize, the first time was when his "Being John Malkovich" won, back in 2000. The movie also received the Robert Altman award, for it's long list of great actors and actresses. It only missed out on the prize for best screenplay, where it lost to Vicky Cristina Barcelona by Woody Allen.

However there are yet no word about Spike Jonze attending the award show, but Michelle Williams (his current girlfriend?) was there. Neither are there any pictures from the show with him. A couple of the cast from "Synecdoche, New York" was there too, including Catherine Keener and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. While the show reunited Cameron Diaz, John Malkovich and Charlie Kaufman who worked together on "Being John Malkovich".

Was "The Fall" really snubbed for some Oscar nods?

The Fall was presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze. The movie was so beautiful, with great cinematography, great costumes + make-up, good art direction and all that. But when the nominees were revealed, "The Fall" was left empty handed. Which left some fans dissapointed.

But was the movie really snubbed? No, not really. Of course it deserves some attentention, but the movie was up against some really heavy weighters, which deserved it more, and severel other movies were also snubbed.

Too bad people! The Spike Jonze produced "Synecdoche, New York" have received NO Oscar Nomination.

Even the amazing song "Little Person" failed to get a nomination. The movie at least had a shot of getting a nomination of being nominated for "Best Achievement in makeup", but the nominations went to:

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" which Spike Jonze once was in talks to direct, received 14 nominations. Including Best Picture, and Best Director. While Phillip Seymour Hoffman (who also played the lead role in "Synecdoche, New York") got a Nomination for Performance by an actor in a supporting role, for his work in "Doubt".

Hopefully Where the Wild Things Are will sweep the nominations next year!

In the weekend of January 16-18 2009, Charlie Kaufmann's "Synecdoche, New York" grossed $40,600, which leaves the total domestic box office gross at $2,854,000. For the last five weeks, the weekend gross have been between $36,000 to $50,000, and for the last seven weeks the movie's total gross have been above $2,000,000 and below $3,000,000. Not impressive for a movie that had a budget of $20,000,000.

The lovely Actress Lauren Ambrose recently claimed she had a blast voicing the Wild Thing KW (Kiwi, the fruit, get it?). And that her character is a "eight-foot-tall Neanderthal" that looks just like her. Spot on!

My "Labyrinth" vibes from the "Wild Things"

I don't know what it is, but first I guessed it was the looks of the Wild Things (well, what else should it be) that gives me the feeling that "Where the Wild Things Are" will be this generation's "Labyrinth". But it shows that are more similarities.

Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" and was released in 1986. It features lots of puppets - both big and small - from the Jim Henson company. The movie was rather dark, but gained cult status. Also it featured a young talented lead, which hadn't acted in many movies before. Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" is supposed to be released in 2009. It features some "Wild Things, which is puppets, made by the Jim Henson Company. "Where the Wild Things Are" was after a screening called dark, but other called it cult. The lead role is played by a young actor, which haven't appeared in many movies before.

When I saw those two "Wild Things" (picture above) I got a weird "Labyrinth" vibe. Maybe the overall feeling will be the same.

"Where the Wild Things Are" - Best Kids Movie of 2009?

Hotel for Dogs, G-Force, Cats & Dogs 2, Astro Boy, Inkheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, Coraline, Tooth Fairy, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Monsters Vs. Aliens, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Ice Age 3, Vanilla Gorilla and Where the Wild Thigs Are. 2009 is full of them, with a long line-up of of many different movies for the family.

Right now "Where the Wild Things Are" seems like one of the most promising, with Wes Anderson adaption of Roald Dahl's "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" made in Stop Motion, right after it. But many other of the flicks have great potential.

In the animated department there's "Up" from Pixar. A weird story, from a movie company that (nearly) always deliver, with only "Cars" as a big stinker. The first review for "Up" have been really positive, so the chances of a new "Cars" are hopefully small, while the chance of being best family/kids movie of 2009 are huge.

"Coraline" is one of the first movies this year to be released, which seems to have quality. Else there's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" "Princess and the Frog" and "Monsters vs. Aliens" which seems to be above average. "Vanilla Gorilla", "Astro Boy", "Planet 51" seems to be the worst animated movies this year. This year Tim Burton is back with "9" (which he produced) and "Frankenweenie" (which still don't have a release date) but they doesn't looks like a family/kids movies, and made for a older audience. (Even though "9" looks awesome!)

A dozen of movies featuring animals is also a reality in 2009. "Hotel for Dogs" with lovely Lisa Kudrow and the great Don Cheadle could have the most potential of the animals-movies. Unnecessary sequels to "Cats and Dogs" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks", spy-guinea pigs in "G-Force" will terror us this year.

"Where the Wild Things Are" is a live-action fantasy, and so is "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", "Tooth Fairy" and "Inkheart". The Spike Jonze directed movie will be the best live-action movie for the family this year. "Harry Potter" may gross the most, and "Tooth Fairy" and "Inkheart" looks horrible.

At the bottom line, it's "Up", "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" which seems to be the best family movies of the year.

Australia. That's where the wild things are. Director Spike Jonze made extensive use of Down Under locales for his long-awaited take on Maurice Sendak's classic children's tale. ''The look and feel is very naturalistic—when our creatures knock down trees, they really knock down trees,'' says Jonze. ''When I was a boy, reading this story, I imagined myself really being there—not in front of a bluescreen.''

Jonze has been in production since 2006 and admits ''none of it was easy.'' Among the challenges: evoking the rich interior life of a precocious child (newcomer Max Records, left). ''The movie rests on Max's performance,'' says Jonze. ''It's all about taking this 9-year-old seriously as a person.''

2008 was a interesting year for Spike Jonze, and a lot of events went on.

In January a test screening of "Where the Wild Things Are" was held. Which caused (nearly) all the controversy, the movie had this year. Many positive reviews were posted online, but one stood out and called it "not kid friendly" or something. The media began to call the whole test screening for negative or "a complete disaster" even though the movie had received great reviews. Warner Bros. chose to re-shoot some of the scenes, which the media blow up, and rumors about re-shooting the entire movie, made tons of Spike Jonze fans angry. And all over the Internet, there were petitions to save Spike Jonze's vision, and on many message boards people were attacking Warner Bros. Although some few re-shoots were filmed in June. Spike Jonze finally opened up to the world about the movie, and the currently status of it. The Buzz for the movie exploded, and is one of the most anticipaced movie of the year.

Something else that took a lot of Spike's time, this year, was "Synecdoche, New York" which he produced. The movie opened at the Cannes Film Festival. He walked up the red carpet, side by side, with Charlie Kaufman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and his currently girlfriend, Michelle Williams.

The movie received mostly great reviews, and featured many of the critic's "Top 10 Best Movies of 2008". But "Synecdoche, New York" failed to really score some awards, and was completely overlooked by the Golden Globe people.

Spike Jonze produced the documentary "Heavy Metal in Baghdad", and presented "The Fall". Both movies received really positive reviews, but was like "Synecdoche, New York" completely overlooked.

But 2009 seems much more exciting for Spike Jonze. First of all, a new Spike Jonze movie is released. "Where the Wild Things Are" will finally hits theaters. All the promotion will be begin, and a trailer should be ready to be shown in front of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince".

Also, that new Weezer music video, will be ready sometime soon! The music video is for the song, Greatest man in the world. It's the 4. time that Spike Jonze and Weezer works together.

Michelle Williams and Spike Jonze is still together, and if the couple will keep together, or totally split, can only time tell.

Mark Ruffalo in Where the Wild Things are?

It appears that the cast for Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, aren't completely revealed. After it was announced that Chris Cooper was in the movie, while Paul Dano wasn't, it was rather unclear who's actually stars, in this upcoming fantasy tale. Michelle Williams was also once in the movie, but she officially got replaced by Lauren Ambrose.

And now it seems that Mark Ruffalo, also have a part in the movie. Rope OF Silicon have been the first, to post it. In their new "Warner Bros. 2009 Preview", they have posted Mark Ruffalo, as one of the cast members from Where the Wild Things Are.

Rumors that he stars in it, have also been on for some days. But it is unknown what his part is in the movie, if he actually have got one. But I'm guessing it's the role of Connie's/Mom's (Catherine Keener) boyfriend, who (in the script) doesn't come along so well with Max.

The Curious Case of Benjamin button is soon in cinemas, and everyone seems to be praising it, and lately it scored a couple of Golden Globes nominations (but so did Tom Cruise...).

Next year, Spike Jonze's new feature Where the Wild Things Are are being released, and since it's similar to Benjamin Button, the questions is, can Spike Jonze also pull it off, and deliver a masterpiece from a short classic story.

Both directors have been a member of Propaganda Films.

Both Where the Wild Things and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is made by new and groundbreaking technical methods. They are both a part, of what the media calls "The Breaking Trilogy", the third one being James Cameron's Avatar.

Both movies are based on a short story, which have been adapted into a long movie.

Both directors had problem with the studios while finishing the movie.

Both stories are a fantasy tale, but still were different from the genre "fantasy".

I bet there are many more, but this is just a handful. Keep in mind, that both movies will be very different, even though they are similar.

A movie that everyone is talking about these days, is David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". The movie leads the Golden Globe nominations, and the buzz on the movie are skyhigh.

But one thing, you probably didn't know was (Yes, you're right, it have something to do with Spike Jonze) that mr. Jonze himself, was once in talks to direct the movie. It was long time ago, actually while he still was in talk to direct "Star Wars", and planning "Adaptation.". But why he turned the director job down, is unknown. Read the old article below.

Marking his first Hollywood scripting effort without writing partner Alexander Payne, Oscar-nominated scribe Jim Taylor has inked a deal to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" for Paramount Pictures.

Taylor, who with helmer and co-scribe Alexander Payne penned MTV Films' sardonic "Election" for Paramount, also wrote 1996's "Citizen Ruth."

"Button" tells the story of a man who, at 50, begins aging backward. When he falls in love with a woman of 30, they must deal with the awkward effects his predicament has on their relationship. Pic is being produced by Kennedy/Marshall and Rastar.

Spike Jonze, who made his helming debut on USA Films' "Being John Malkovich," is attached to helm. The two kept running into each other for the better part of the spring at various awards shows -- both "Election" and "Malkovich" were up for WGA, DGA, Indie Spirit and Academy Awards -- and became determined to work on something together.

Jonze, repped by CAA, gained prominence as a music vid helmer, working with such acts as the Beastie Boys and techno star Fat Boy Slim. He is currently also attached to helm "Adaptation" for Columbia, a script by "Malkovich" scribe Charles Kaufman.

Cooper to star as "Wild Things" goat

In the fameous AICN interview, they said that Billy Bob Thornton was delivering a voice as one of the monsters in Where the Wild Things Are. It's unkwon which Wild Thing it was, but he was voicing it.

Now, according to the theplaylist.blogspot.com, it's not Billy Bob Thornton who's voicing it. It's actually Chris Cooper who worked with Spike Jonze on his acclaimed "Adaptation." which gave him a Academy Award.

The Playlist is also informing that he's voicing Alexander the Goat. Which according to IMDb is voiced by Paul Dano. And know it's unkwon if he's (Paul Dano) still in the movie.

Where the Wild Things Are is in theaters next october. It's directed by Spike Jonze.

But in the past year, the film has been plagued by rumors: that Jonze's version was too dark, that the studio hated it, that Jonze might take his name off the movie. Here, the media-shy Jonze finally sets the record straight on one of 2009's most anticipated films.

Fans were thrilled that you and Eggers were collaborating on WTWTA. But then it was reported that Warner Bros. was concerned about an early version, that it wasn't the mass-audience movie they wanted. What happened?
Well, the editing process wasn't always fun, but in the end, we've made the movie we set out to make. All the reasons you were excited about it, those were the reasons they [Warner Bros.] were uncomfortable with it. It isn't what they're familiar with. But they've become comfortable and embraced it. In the end, they let me finish my movie.

They had to have known if they hired you and Eggers, it was going to be unusual.
It's just not the kind of movie that they make on their own. In most movies about kids, there's, like, a movie reality: The conflict is a movie conflict, the kid is a movie kid. So when you see behavior or a tone that's not like that, it took them a while to embrace that.

What specifically did you and the producers argue about?
You know, it's like talking about a couple that's been fighting and going to counseling. What matters now is that we made it through all of that — and it's probably better not to rehash what happened in counseling. I got to make my movie. It is true to the intention of what I set out to do.

What was your intention?
I wanted to make a movie that felt true to me and my experience of being a kid, trying to understand the world and people around me, trying to understand the relationships and wild emotions inside me and the people I was close to. As a kid, there's no road map to navigate any of that. Basically, I wanted to take this nine-year-old kid seriously as a person who is trying to understand the world and himself.

Some early reports said that the film might be too intense for young kids.
We're walking that line of making something that's intense, because kids are so open that something that's just kind of intense is really intense to an eight-year-old. But any rumor gets so blown out of proportion.

Is it a film for young kids?
It's not for all four-year-olds. It might not be right for one four-year-old but could work for another. When Maurice wrote the book, Max was five. When I started, it felt like the natural age for Max was eight or nine. So the movie is different in that way.

Is it true there was a moment you almost walked away?
It goes back to the couples counseling. There was definitely a point in time when they were sleeping on the sofa.

Has Maurice Sendak seen it?
Maurice is happy with it. It was important to me that he felt it was honest. To know that he is happy and didn't think it was pandering or cutesy . . . that passed his barometer test of honesty. That meant a lot.

What was the biggest lesson of all this?
I think I was sort of willfully naive about how hard it was going to be, given the size of the movie, the technical difficulty, that it's a movie starring a kid, shot on locations. But I think it's important to stay naive through all of that. If you make decisions based on how hard they're going to be, then it could be a mistake. So I hope I can be as naive to how hard it is next time. But I need to sleep for a year before I can do anything again.

Academy Award winning visual effects supervisor Howard Berger (The Chronicles of Narnia) turned down offers to work on the film four times. Although the book inspired him as a child to work in special effects, he felt filming it was a “horrible idea”.

Anyone remember when Spike Jonze said that the costume used in the test footage, wasn't going to look like the one in the movie?

Well, they do look a tiny bit like each other!

However, if you look at these two photos, the one being from the test footage, the other is the new released still, you can see that the tone of the film will be very different. The first picture, looks cute and cuddly, while the new picture looks dramatic.

Well all see how it turns out, next October.
